Excavation & Grading – Phases & Services

Excavation is the act of digging, often with the use of heavy equipment in the course of site development, earthmoving, or land grading. Excavation is an integral part of new building construction, demolition, site clearing, landscaping, and drainage projects.  When it comes to starting a project, site clearing and excavation can make all the difference in how smoothly the rest of your project will be executed.

Site Clearance

The main purpose of site clearance is to remove existing buildings, waste, vegetation and, most importantly, the surface layer of soil referred to as topsoil. It is necessary to remove this layer of soil, as it is unsuitable to build on. This surface layer of soil is difficult to compact down due to the high content of vegetable matter, which makes the composition of the soil soft and loose. The topsoil also contains various chemicals that encourage plant growth, which may adversely affect some structures over time.

Grading is the reshaping of the ground’s surface to meet a planned slope, level, or shape. Such grading is common in construction projects, landscaping projects, road construction, land clearing, drainage correction, and more.

Site Work refers to the excavation, digging, and preparation of the ground’s surface to provide a secure, standardized surface off of which to build. Site work also involves foundation construction, electric utilities, water line

installation, and septic systems. Site preparation is required in new building construction projects, where the ground must be prepared in order to securely support the new building and site pad.

Proper site pad development is essential. It helps ensure that your slab is properly installed and protected. A good slab has a solid compacted area that will not shift, is level and is raised above the surrounding area to keep water from collecting around or entering your home.  It is important not to cut corners on site preparation or pad construction. Poor pad construction will eventually lead to, house settling, erosion and flooding. Such problems  will become a serious cash flow drain for years until corrected.
